Sony Open in Hawaii Lanai Brings More "Green" to the Greens

The green pavilion, called the Greenside Lanai, is located next to the 9th green (normally the club's 18th green). It was designed by Honolulu architectural firm Group 70 International using two 45-foot Matson shipping containers as the base. Honolulu-based Swinerton Builders donated its labor as general contractor.

Almost all of the materials used to make the Greenside Lanai are recycled or sustainable, or they're intended to reduce energy use and waste," said George Ehara, division manager for Swinerton Builders.

Ehara said similar concepts could be adapted for commercial or residential use.

Recycled building materials used in the design include everything from reused wood and glass to paint and carpet. Photovoltaic panels will power the air-conditioning system.
