Designs for New Trace Elementary Revealed

A two-story J-shaped classroom building equipped with fire sprinklers likely will replace the pod of rooms burned in an arson fire last summer at Trace Elementary School in the Rose Garden.

At a community meeting this week, San Jose Unified School District unveiled drawings of the replacement building.

Designed by BFGC-IBI Group Architecture Planning of San Jose, the building will be outfitted with automatic fire sprinklers and remotely monitored smoke and fire detectors, district spokeswoman Karen Fuqua

Construction by Swinerton Builders of Santa Clara is expected to begin in June and be completed in July 2012, Fuqua said.

The previous classrooms were demolished soon after the fire, and the remaining concrete pad and brick columns will be demolished starting June 5. The concrete from the foundation will be crushed and used as base rock, Fuqua said.
