Swinerton Builders - San Joaquin Community Hospital Cancer Center

San Joaquin Community Hospital (SJCH) estimates that Kern County, Calif., has one of the highest cancer rates of any region in the state or nation.  The SJCH Cancer Center is the county’s first hospital-based comprehensive center with new radiation oncology, medical oncology and outpatient surgery center – all under one roof.  In addition, not only will the facility improve the health and care of local patients, it has been constructed to limit its environmental impact and is highly efficient.  Work on it began in mid-2011 and opened this month.

The design/build partnership consisted of BFGC-IBI Group Architecture Planning and Swinerton Builders. “Design/build gives a big advantage to owners because the project has a single source of responsibility,” Swinerton Project Executive Brendan Bloom explains. “It also is an integrated approach. Input about the project is collaborated on long before the work is done.”

Many of the facility’s users were involved in the design and Swinerton’s team often met with the cancer center team to ensure it was meeting the hospital’s needs. “We had an official meeting at least once a week with the center’s team, but we met informally almost every day just to check in with each other,” Bloom says.

SJCH had worked with BFGC-IBI Group Architecture Planning on a previous project, so the hospital contacted the firm again for this facility. BFGC-IBI contacted Swinerton Builders’ San Francisco office to conduct the design/build contracting work.
