Green Attention Turns to Renovating Existing Buildings

The USGBC re-launched its LEED for Existing Buildings program in January to demonstrate to property owners that there are multiple things they can do to green their buildings within the confines of operations and maintenance budgets. There are almost 1,000 new registrants since the beginning of the year. Through the end of 2007, there were only about 500 projects seeking certification for existing

buildings.

"One of the greenest, most sustainable things you can do is to reuse an existing building and design for durability so that your building is around for a long time," said Grant French, corporate sustainability manager at San Francisco-based general contractor Swinerton.
