Contractor Named for Development Near New Sacramento Kings Arena
The Sacramento Kings and their development partner Thursday named the contractor that will build the hotel tower and other developments adjacent to the team’s new downtown arena.
Swinerton Builders, a commercial contractor with offices in Sacramento and elsewhere, was named to the $200 million-plus project by the Kings and JMA Ventures. Swinerton already operates a 225-employee office near Fruitridge Road in Sacramento and has worked on projects for clients such as UC Davis Medical Center, Cache Creek Casino and CalSTRS.
Technically, the Kings and JMA have so far hired Swinerton only to perform pre-construction services, including preliminary site work. But that’s a precursor to bringing Swinerton onboard as contractor, said Kings President Chris Granger.
“We love the fact that they have deep Sacramento roots,” Granger said. He added that Swinerton has a strong relationship with Turner Construction, the general contractor on the $477 million arena.
The ancillary development, just north of the new arena under construction at Downtown Plaza, consists mainly of a 16-story tower that will include hotel rooms, office space, retailing and condo units. Granger said the partners expect to announce the hotel’s brand in a few weeks.
The Kings and JMA also plan to renovate much of the western half of Downtown Plaza, which is still open, but specific plans haven’t been announced.
Initial plans for the development have been submitted to city officials, and the partners hope to begin construction in about two months. They expect to complete work in time for the arena’s scheduled opening in October 2016.
The ancillary development, while separate from the arena, was a key factor in the City Council’s decision last May to contribute a $255 million subsidy to the project.
