EHDD Designs $61M Coastal Biology Building Project for UC Santa Cruz
UC Santa Cruz is looking for subcontractors for a $61 million construction project, the Coastal Biology Building that will be the cornerstone of the Marine Science Campus on a 2-acre site on McAllister Way on the city's Westside.
Plans call for a two-story lab building comprising 44,000 square feet designed in accordance with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold standards, a 20,000-gallon seawater storage tank, and a complex of six greenhouses and a 3,300-square-foot greenhouse facility.
Parking will be added along with a 1.2 mile pedestrian and bicycle trail.
The building will have a "barn-like style," in keeping with the area, which is home to UCSC's Long Marine Laboratory .
The architect is EHDD of San Francisco , which designed UCSC's Biomedical Sciences Building , the Science Library and Colleges 9 and 10.
Contractor Swinerton Builders , based in Santa Clara , is seeking subcontractors to submit pre-qualifications by 4 p.m. Friday .
Bids are being sought for infrastructure estimated to cost $16 million , landscaping and irrigation, $2.5 million , structural steel, $2 million and foundations, $1.2 million .
The project, a decade in the works, was part of the long range development plan adopted by the UC Regents in 2004.
The California Coastal Commission gave its approval in 2009.
University officials hoped to start the project in 2013 and complete the marine science campus in June 2015 , contingent on state funding.
Project costs were estimated at $1,065 per gross square foot, more than the UCSC Biomedical Science building at $820 per gross square foot. But the project is less than UC Berkeley's Solar Energy Research Center , $1,307 per gross square foot.
Nothing of this size has been built in Santa Cruz since the recession. The 100-room Holiday Inn Express , built in 2009, sold this year for $16.5 million .
