Miramar College Opens $16.5M Firefighter Training Center
San Diego Miramar College recently opened a newly completed, $16.5 million training center for fire technology and emergency medical technician programs.
San Diego Community College District officials said the 26,000-square-foot center includes state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, a command center, equipment staging and outdoor training areas, including a four-story drill tower. A public ceremony marked the opening on Sept. 11.
The center will serve Miramar College students and in-service needs of several area fire departments. More than 50 departments locally and throughout California hire Miramar College-trained firefighters, officials said.
The center is located off Westview Parkway, on the north campus gateway adjacent to the college’s new administration building and transit center. The design-builder on the fire training center was Swinerton Builders and the architect was gkkworks.
The training center project was funded through existing state bond construction programs for educational facilities. The college’s Prop. S and Prop. N building projects are managed by San Diego-based Gafcon Inc.
