Senior-Living High-Rise Tower Near Hawaii Convention Center Finally Getting Built
A San Francisco-based developer plans to begin construction this week on Kalakaua Garden, a long-planned, 17-story senior-living facility on Kalakaua Avenue near the Hawaii Convention Center.
Island Paradise Investments, which originally planned to build a residential condominium on the site at 1723 Kalakaua Ave., in 2008, switched gears three years ago to develop what was then to be a $50 million assisted-living and skilled-nursing facility on the property.
San Francisco-based Swinerton Builders, which has an office in Honolulu, is the general contractor for the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2015. Honolulu-based Architects Hawaii Ltd. designed the project, which is currently in pre-construction.
The building will include 132 assisted-living units, 32 memory-care units, 49 skilled-nursing beds and a rehabilitation center.
Island Paradise Investments, which did not immediately respond to a message left by PBN on Monday, said in 2011 that the facility was targeting a range of seniors, from those who are active and in need of a minimum amount of assistance to people who require skilled-nursing and hospice care. It also said at the time that the facility could be open in early 2013.
Kalakaua Garden is located at the same location as the 1723 Kalakaua project, a 16-story, 110-unit residential condominium that at one time drew hundreds of prospective buyers. When Island Paradise Investments put the units for that project up for sale in 2008, dozens of people camped out for three days to be the first in line to purchase a unit.
