Swinerton Builders Wins $10.2M Contract For Grossmont's Surgical Unit
San Diego-based Swinerton Builders has won a $10.2 million construction contract – the last available under 2006’s $247 million Proposition G – to build out the surgery floor of Grossmont Healthcare District’s new, 71,000-square-foot Heart and Vascul
The contract came in at $1.7 million, or about 14.3 percent, below what the taxpayer-funded district had initially projected.
Located at the 540-bed Sharp Grossmont Hospital, the surgery floor is expected to be completed in 2018, at which point $8 million in medical equipment will be installed. The facility was designed to include four new cardiac catheterization labs, four multipurpose procedural rooms and space for various other kinds of surgery.
Initial phases of the building on the hospital’s eastern side were done last year at a cost of more than $60 million.
The overall construction campaign has also given the hospital a new pharmacy, a laboratory for clinical testing, three elevators and heating and air-conditioning equipment, among other amenities.
Since the balloting measure passed in June 2006 with more than 77 percent voter approval, it has also funded a central energy plant, renovation of four floors of the hospital’s seven-story, 43-year-old East Tower building. The medical center, opened in 1955, is managed by San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare.
Because the proposition can only fund construction, the nonprofit Grossmont Hospital Foundation is trying to raise $15 million for additional medical technology equipment for the heart and vascular center.
