Swinerton Completes Massive Data Center Expansion in Irvine
Swinerton Builders, one of the nation's oldest and most trusted construction firms, tapped into the talent of its Critical Facilities division on the recently completed Phase 2 of a 93,000-square-foot build-out for Latisys, a national IT infrastructure services provider with a large data center in Irvine, CA. Backed by 125 years of construction expertise, Swinerton has built data centers for Time Warner Cable, T-Mobile, Army Space Command, and Intel, among numerous other marquee brands. The Latisys expansion contract follows record revenue growth for Swinerton in 2012 and a significant project backlog in the critical facilities sphere for 2013.
"Data center projects demand mature, repeatable, and reliable methods. This project required us to perform under exacting conditions, including an aggressive 14-week schedule,” commented Dave Higgins, Jr., senior vice president and manager of Swinerton’s Critical Facilities division. “We are very excited to demonstrate our unique capabilities as a trusted partner of Latisys.”
Details of this complex expansion included a three-foot raised floor with three ramps and one set of stairs, as well as 12 freestanding PDUs on the raised floor area. The electrical room built specifically for Phase 2 (CP-2) houses three Liebert CRAC units, Square D switchgear, UPS models, and lighting control panels. All gear within CP-2 rests on four-inch housekeeping pads.
Four Energy Lab units were attached to a superstructure mounted on the roof via columns and beams supported from grade level. The Energy Lab units are “hybrid” systems, which provide 1,200 tons of cooling via air- and water-side economization and evaporative cooling. Fire protection is provided by a pre-action system along with VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus).
“Working with Swinerton has been a very positive experience,” commented Corey Needles, vice president of data center operations for Latisys. “The Critical Facilities team demonstrated data center expertise in an operational facility while managing construction of our modular growth.”
