April may have been one of the rainiest months ever on record for Portland, but it didn’t put a damper on the Swinerton team’s volunteer efforts!
Several employees kicked off the month of April by volunteering at New Avenues for Youth’s 7th annual Scoop-A-Thon on Tuesday, April 4. The Scoop-A-Thon happens once a year on Ben & Jerry’s National Free Cone Day at New Avenues’ two PartnerShop locations.
As an event sponsor, Swinerton employees got to get behind the counter and scoop ice cream for an hour with New Avenues’ employed youth. This year’s goal was to raise $50,000 for job-training programs through donations and sponsorships. With Swinerton’s help, New Avenues nearly hit their goal, falling just $848 short and raising $49,152.
In addition to participating in the Scoop-A-Thon, some Swinerton chefs cooked up a delicious tuna casserole dinner at the New Avenues drop-in shelter location on Thursday, April 20.
As much as Swinerton employees love helping humans, they’re sure not to forget their canine friends too. This year’s Earth Day volunteer event on Saturday, April 22 was reflective of that.
Employees teamed up with the Oregon Humane Society to help maintain the dog-walking path and natural area behind the shelter. With approximately two hours to work, Swinerton zeroed in on the removal of invasive plant species and managed to clear 1,600 square feet of blackberry thistle.
While this all seems like quite a lot, the work doesn’t stop there. Swinerton also partnered with Rebuilding Together for their National Rebuild Day on Saturday, April 29. Stay tuned for more details on one of the office’s favorite events!
