As part of their 23rd Annual Christmas in October Event, the Real Estate Council of Austin (RECA) selected SafePlace as the beneficiary for their celebration. Each year RECA selects an organization to receive an early Christmas gift of design and renovation to their chosen facility. SafePlace was selected as the 2014 beneficiary after RECA’s LDC class toured the facility, and learned how SafePlace impacts the lives of many throughout the communities it serves.
Located in east Austin, SafePlace acts as a refuge for women and children afflicted with sexual and domestic violence. They provide a 105-bed emergency shelter and transitional housing, counseling, support and legal advocacy, as well as extensive children’s services including an onsite K-12 charter school.
Together with their family members and friends, Swinerton employees and other RECA members helped design, build, and renovate outdoor spaces at the facility, creating an outside sanctuary for the families of SafePlace to enjoy. Renovations included improvements to child play areas, new sunshades, enhanced landscaping and trails, and fencing. Swinerton also donated one child and nine adult picnic tables to be used by families to find comfort, enjoy their beautiful surroundings, and enhance their experience while staying at the facility.
SafePlace was founded with the mission of ending sexual and domestic violence through safety, healing, prevention, and social change, and has been positively affecting the Austin, Texas community with its innovative and effective programs for over 40 years.
