For several years, the construction industry workforce in the San Francisco Bay Area has been increasing in median age. It's a major challenge for the industry - how to continue to keep our workers safe while hiring new workers and adapting to changing times.
Recently, Swinerton's Steve Johnson was featured in the San Francisco Business Times to discuss the industry-wide issue and how Swinerton is working to tackle it.
Whatever the cause, Steve Johnson, Swinerton’s senior vice president in San Francisco, has tracked the trend at least since the recession, if not longer.
Johnson, and other leaders, compensate in several ways: They have increased labor efficiency by using more prefabricated components, have devoted more resources to pre-construction planning and scheduling to avoid crossed wires and costly delays. Swinerton has also embraced more workforce flexibility, providing a greater number of pathways up the corporate ladder, and more mentorship and education programs.
