Make-A-Wish Fundraiser Efforts Huge Success

The dedication, passion, and determination of Swinerton’s Sacramento team shined as the office once again teamed-up with the Make-A-Wish® (MAW) Northeastern California and Nevada chapter. In addition to granting the wishes of Wyatt and Lauren, they gave MAW’s Wishing Room a complete makeover and held a successful fundraising campaign that generated over $45,000 for the non-profit.

Spearheaded by Swinerton Senior Superintendent Steve Harless, the Sacramento team’s MAW fundraiser kicked-off when he recruited a group of employees and project partners to renovate MAW’s Wishing Room at their Sacramento location. The Wishing Room is a magical room where approximately 300 wishes are granted each year. All children in the Sacramento region that are granted a wish through the organization are brought into this room, accompanied by their families, to drop their wish request in a mock wishing well. Once the wish is dropped into the well, the room lights up with special-effects lighting, and music is played to indicate the wish has been granted. Although the staff loved the Wishing Room, they called upon the Sacramento team to turn it into an even more magical, interactive place for the wish children and their families.

In April approximately 12 volunteers from the Sacramento team came together to complete the project by installing new roofing elements and final lighting. The MAW staff was so ecstatic with the finished product, they gave Swinerton Vice President and Division Manager Curtis Johnson the “golden key” to open the room and unveil the final product for everyone.

For this year’s fundraiser, the team almost doubled their 2015 fundraising total, raising approximately $44,323 for the non-profit. From live and silent auctions to raffles at jobsite barbeques, bike-a-thons, recycling, and several generous trade partner and individual employee donations, this year’s fundraiser was both fun and a huge success.

To round-out the campaign, on May 18, the Sacramento office held a special carnival-themed celebration for wish kids Wyatt and Lauren, incorporating elements from both their wishes into the event. As Wyatt’s wish was to have a Star Wars experience and visit Harry Potter World, and Lauren’s wish was to head to the big island of Hawaii, Darth Vader and Hula dancers were the guests of honor—Dinger from the Sacramento River Cats even made a special appearance! Thanks to the efforts of the team, Wyatt and Lauren and their families are now looking forward more than ever to their wishes.

A huge thank you to the Sacramento team for your all your efforts. The generous support of employees like you makes it possible for our organization to give back to our community and make it a better place to live.
