Sharp Mary Birch Hospital: Design-Build Solution Delivers for Patients
Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns delivers more babies than any other hospital in California. The sixstory hospital provides normal and high risk Obstetrical, Newborn and Medical/Surgical Services and is home to one of the most respected Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the world. In addition to a world-class NICU, the hospital utilizes 169 beds and 9 Operating Rooms. The extensive remodel took place over multiple phases spanning several years while the facility remained fully operational.
Sharp Healthcare chose design-build delivery to bring a collaborative team on board early in order to define phasing and design solutions to facilitate the vision of the hospital while not impacting daily operations. It was imperative that the entire team work together to not only mitigate impact, but also to define sequences of construction, speed the delivery of the project and provide feasible, cost-effective solutions.
The overriding goals which this project set out to achieve included: increase capacity, improve patient care, enhance the patient experience, improve patient flow throughout, correct inefficiencies, and refresh finishes to create a healing environment of care.
In healthcare, the patient is at the center. Improving the patient experience not only advances healing but contributes to an increased likelihood that patients choose Sharp for their care. It is proven that there is a link between a patient’s psychological and physical recovery and their environment. Armed with this knowledge, the design-build team applied evidence based design practices to incorporate elements that promoted healing.
Perhaps the most profound example of this was the conversion/addition of private, single-bed rooms. On the upper patient floors alone, 27 pods of semi-private patient rooms with shared bathrooms were converted to 54 private rooms with private bathrooms. Private rooms were incorporated at NICU and PACU as well. Design excellence and adherence to the client’s values was achieved as evidenced by Press Ganey scores on room satisfaction which went from a 64 right before the renovation began in 2011, to a 92 currently.
“It was an exceptional experience. Their attention to detail, their willingness to work with the owner as full design build team members was top notch."
