SACRAMENTO
HEROES IN ACTION
When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening condition,
it’s hard to find hope. The hours spent in hospitals, visiting
doctors, and undergoing treatments can dampen one’s spirit.
The Make-A-Wish (MAW) Foundation aims to bring hope
back into these children’s lives by granting them a wish.
Swinerton’s Sacramento team has been a proud supporter
of the Make-A-Wish Northeastern California and Nevada
chapter for many years. In April, MAW reached out and
asked if the group could help them renovate their existing
Wishing Room in Sacramento. The Wishing Room is a
magical room where approximately 300 wishes are granted
each year. All children in the Sacramento region that are
granted a wish through the organization are brought to this
room, accompanied by their families, to drop their wish
request in a mock wishing well. Once the wish is dropped in
the well, the room lights up with special-effects lighting, and
music is played to indicate the wish has been granted.
Steve Harless led a team of approximately 12 volunteers
to complete the makeover project by installing new roofing
elements and final lighting. The dedication, determination,
and passion of Steve and the team shined throughout the
entire process, making the Wishing Room an even more
magical place for the wish children and their families. The
MAW staff was so ecstatic with the finished product, they
gave the group the “golden key” to open the room and
unveil the final product for everyone.
