HAWAII
HEROES IN ACTION
The holidays are a time when families and friends come
together to celebrate and share fond memories, food, and
presents. Whether it’s the crisp weather or the stories of
flying reindeer, there always seems to be something magical
in the air. Those people in need experience a different kind
of holiday though. For them, the holidays can be a very
lonely time—a reminder of the things that they are without.
Everyone knows the mission of The Salvation Army. We’ve
all seen the red cans posted outside of retail stores and
merry volunteers ringing a bell. Many of you have probably
dropped your spare change in that can, maybe even a buck
or two. The Salvation Army provides support to those in need
year-round, but it’s perhaps the work that they do during the
holidays that is known best.
Each year, the Swinerton Hawaii team participates in The
Salvation Army Hawaiian and Pacific Island’s Angel Tree
program. The program runs every holiday season to provide
underprivileged children and seniors with gifts for the
holidays. The trees, placed in various locations, are filled
with angel tag ornaments, which corresponds to a child or
senior with a special wish for Christmas. Employees then
purchase the requested gifts and The Salvation Army delivers
them to the “Angels”. This year, the Hawaii team had an
ambitious goal to adopt 275 Angels. With a staff of only 95
employees, it was a generous ask. But with full hearts, the
team was able to make the holiday season a little brighter for
all 275 Kupunas and Keikis by granting their wish.
