Autodesk BIM 360 Glue Helps Streamline Design and Construction Processes
Autodesk, Inc. is launching a new version of Autodesk BIM 360 Glue, a cloud-based Building Information Modeling (BIM) solution. Autodesk BIM 360 Glue is an innovative management software solution that extends the BIM process from design to the construction stage by providing access to project information for model coordination and clash detection to all project stakeholders via desktop, mobile and web.
Extended project design and construction teams can better coordinate and communicate with one-click access to review the latest project models and run clashes in real-time, saving time and money on design and construction projects. The introduction of mobile devices into the construction industry is transforming the way that projects are built and managed. With BIM 360 Glue, enhanced cloud-based collaboration and mobile access helps ensure that the entire project team can participate in the coordination process, minimizing the coordination cycles and providing teams with tools to view the designs wherever they are located.
“We have found that BIM 360 Glue has considerably shortened the amount of time needed to perform building system coordination,” said James McKenzie Director-Center for Excellence, Swinerton Incorporated. “Usage of BIM 360 Glue now means that we can focus on clash avoidance using our experienced field personnel rather than relying on an automated clash detection process that often times results in an enormous amount of false clashes that needed to be sorted out. This clash avoidance helps project stake holders have an intimate knowledge of the building in a relatively short amount of time.”

CWS Integrates New Solar Radiation Sensor for Solar Panel Monitoring
On a recent project for Swinerton Renewable Energy, Columbia Weather integrated the newly released Hukseflux SR20 solar sensor. SR20 is a pyranometer of the highest category in the ISO 9060 classification system: secondary standard. This solar radiation sensor is used where the highest measurement accuracy is required. The weather station utilizes an Acromag amplifier to amplify the solar sensor output to higher voltages suitable to CWS’s Microserver inputs and applies individual sensors’ sensitivities. The Acromag also includes programmable relay control to turn on and off sensor heaters to minimize the effect of dew and ice, especially critical in this Ontario, Canada solar panel installation.
Swinerton Renewable Energy has selected weather stations from Columbia Weather Systems to provide meteorological data to their proprietary SCADA system at solar project sites. The construction company offers turn-key solar power solutions for utility-scale and distributed generation projects. To read the entire article, click the link below:

Don't Like Market Street? Wait a Few Minutes
Central Market Street is not changing by the day, it’s changing by the hour.
After a week out of town traveling with my family, I cycled down Market Street Monday morning. Of course I expected some of the progress I saw: AvalonBay had added a couple of floors at 55 Ninth St., Crescent Heights had snapped on more of the glass skin at 1401 Market and poured a few more floors on the tower as well. But other developments were more startling.
At Trinity Plaza, Angelo Sangiacomo is making good on his two-decade old promise to demolish the old vintage 1960 Del Webb’s Townehouse motel and replace it with housing. Swinerton Builders has started pulling down the western edge of the motel. It will be a trip to be able to stand at United Nations Plaza and see clear across a vast vacant parcel to Mission Street.
But Trinity Plaza is not home to the only wrecking crew in the neighborhood.

Here Comes The Sun
The Sacramento Municipality District (SMUD) has been taking advantage of the sun's abundant energy since 1984, when it built the nation's first utility-scale solar array at Rancho Seco, California. Today, the site continues to generate 3.2 megawatts of electricity - enough to power 2,200 single-family homes. Over the years SMUD has continued to pioneer solar efforts in the state, even working with homeowners to put solar panels on their roofs. With the addition of four new photovoltaic sites developed by renewable energy developer Recurrent Energy, SMUD is adding nearly 70 more megawatts of alternating current (AC) to its solar energy portfolio.

W Line Produces Jobs & Prospects, RTD Says
The 12.1-mile W light-rail line which opens Friday not only gives thousands of commuters a new way to get from Golden to Denver but also brings hundreds of jobs, along with housing and business development. The Urban Land Conservancy, for example, has been buying land and properties along the W Line — or West Rail Line — for six years, believing that affordable housing and other community assets will get new life with mass transit.
The general contractor for the transit portion of the project — Denver Transit Construction Group — tapped 550 businesses for either subcontracting or supplies, and 94 percent were locally owned, said FasTracks spokeswoman Pauletta Tonilas. Both Denver Transit and Swinerton Builders — which built two new parking garages for the W Line — also surpassed federal and RTD goals for hiring small and minority businesses, Tonilas said. Swinerton contracted for the $13.5 million parking structure at Wadsworth Boulevard and West 14th Avenue in Lakewood and the $11.5 million parking building at West 10th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard in Denver.

Collaboration Apps Top ENR Survey Results
Something big is happening in construction technology. It goes beyond the recent rampant growth of smart devices on jobsites and the explosive development of apps around the globe. It even goes beyond the growth of cloud computing, helping to manage large project files with faster networks that connect far-flung work crews.
As big as these trends are, an even bigger shift is happening: Collaboration and web services are becoming the norm on more and more projects and transforming how the industry operates. Construction firms increasingly are seeing the value of deploying web services, which can be broadly defined as a set of protocols that help apps to interact over web-connected devices.
Collaboration in the Cloud The top results? Bluebeam Revu for the iPad got the most recommendations. The app ranks high with readers for its ability to view PDF plans, mark up project files and, using those markups, collaborate with work groups around the globe.
Eric Davis, a virtual-design and construction manager with consultant Swinerton, told the FutureTech attendees that field apps have changed the firm's workflow and helped it set standards. "It's a tool to create your own process and standardize" processes, he said. "What we realize now is that we also have real metrics. We have data that we can leverage." Now, the firm is using its workflows to create metrics for benchmarking. "The future is leveraging and sharing the metrics, so we can better the industry and make it more efficient," he says.
