Swinerton Renewable Energy Featured In Solar Power World's Top 100 Solar Contractors Issue

George Hershman, VP of Swinerton Renewable Energy, chimes in on successful solar building as part of Solar Power World’s Top 100 Solar Contractors Issue!

What’s the most important piece of technical advice would you offer your peers?
Understand the demands of the solar market and build an organization that responds to the challenges. Be flexible and adapt to the constant change. Be passionate about it and surround yourself with passionate people. Make it less technical and more personal.

What’s the most important business lesson you’ve learned since you’ve been in the industry?

Recognizing that maturing markets aren’t mature and that means changes are expected and inevitable. The solar market is emerging and will have highs and lows and you need to plan for both.

What do you enjoy least about being in the solar industry?
The continued change of regulations and political support make it difficult to strategically business-plan into the future. Lack of clarity in government support, through incentives and tax programs for solar, causes anxiety in the market that stunts growth opportunities and ultimately slows down job creation.

Fresh Fruits & Veggies to Get a New Home at Five Crowns Marketing's New Storage Facility

KMA Architecture & Engineering has announced that construction is almost complete on a new 47,000-square-foot storage facility for Five Crowns Marketing. KMA partnered with Swinerton Builders on the design-build project. Construction is expected to wrap up by December 2012.

Five Crowns Marketing grows, packs and ships fresh fruits and vegetables from its headquarters in Brawley, Calif.  The new design will transform an existing prefabricated warehouse space into a single-story, energy-efficient facility that will house produce such as romaine lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, sweet corn, cantaloupes, honeydews and various melons. The building will include 18 cooling tunnels and will hold approximately 70,000 cartons of produce.

Additionally, the company has committed to keeping the project environmentally friendly and will eventually cover the roof of the new facility with photovoltaic panels.

“A project like this requires a lot of specialized technical expertise which, in turn, means more consultants and team members to coordinate,” said B. Moon Hajjar, Design Director at KMA. “Working in concert with the whole team to manage this fast-paced project as it evolves has been rewarding to say the least. Each member of the team fully understands their role and trusts the others to do a great job. Trust in our team plays a big part in creating a winning project like this one.”

The KMA team consists of Rich Guerena, project architect; B. Moon Hajjar, project manager; and Ilia Voronchihin, project designer. Structural engineering services are provided by Hope Engineers. Mechanical and plumbing engineering are provided by McParlane Engineering. Electrical engineering is provided by Michael Wall Engineering.

Students Do The Can-can, Produce Replica of Hotel

Yes, we can. And can and can and can ...

Students from The Academy, a charter school in Adams 12 Five Star Schools, built a replica of the Four Seasons Hotel Denver entirely out of canned foods — inside the real hotel of the same name.

It culminated a six-week program, titled Discovery Builders, which introduced 25 students to career opportunities in construction, architecture and engineering. Swinerton Builders launched the program to mark its 70 years in Colorado; the company is based in San Francisco.

Snow & Wind Almost Halt Black Cap Solar Facility Dedication.

Snow and bitterly cold weather nearly short-circuited Friday’s ceremonies for Lakeview’s Black Cap Solar Facility. But despite blustery conditions, its nearly 9,000 solar panels were sending electricity to PacifiCorp’s power grid.

“I get the joy of opening a lot of plants,” said George Hershman, a vice president for Swinerton Renewable Energy, the project’s prime contractor, during ceremonies at the 20-acre site near Lakeview. “I’ve never opened one in the snow.”

“It’s a perfect day for solar,” quipped Toby Freeman, Pacific Power’s regional community manager. “It may be snowing, but we’re generating power.”

Target close to unveiling City Target store in San Francisco's Metreon

Residents of San Francisco are used to living in a compact space, but will they like shopping in a compact Target, too?

Big box retailer Target is less than two weeks from the grand opening of its new City Target in the Metreon in San Francisco.

City Target is a new, smaller format concept for the retailer. Other locations have opened or are planned for Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago and Portland.

The San Francisco store will feature about 100,000 square feet of selling space — a huge amount — but a fraction of a typical Target.

Swinerton was the general contractor on the project.

West Sacramento's Riverbank Elementary School Gets Makeover

Riverbank Elementary was opened more than 50 years ago as a high school. Since that time it has morphed and changed to better serve the community. During the 2011-2012 school year the 12-acre campus was home to third through eighth graders but after a 10-week, $8-million overhaul the campus reopened on August 22, 2012 greeting students’ kindergarten through eighth grade.

While minor work started in May while school was still in session, the majority of the work began in June when school was out, giving HMH Builders just 10 short weeks to complete this unique transformation that not only allows for more students but will improve the students’ learning environment and safety.

Swinerton Renewable Energy Chimes in on Sunshine Electricity in Lakeview Oregon

Work is nearly done on a project that puts Southern Oregon, especially southeast Oregon on the state map for renewable energy. A big solar power generation facility on the outskirts of Lakeview is the largest solar farm in Oregon so far.

There’s really nothing like it until now in Southern Oregon: 20 acres of solar panels – 11,000 panels to be exact. All together they are designed to generate about two megawatts of electricity just from the sun, and you can hardly even tell it’s on the southwest side of Lakeview.

Spotlight Shines on Oregon's Largest Solar Project

Oregon’s largest solar project is moving toward completion in Lakeview.

Lake County and Lakeview officials were given a preview of the side-by-side Black Cap and Lakeview solar projects located on a 21-acre site just south of Lakeview. When completed and on-line in September, the nearly 11,000, 3-1/2- by 6-foot panels will generate about 2.5 megawatts of electricity, or enough for about 450 residential customers.

George Hershman, vice president for Swinerton Renewable Energy, the contractor building the project for Obsidian Renewables, said when plans to build the solar project began, the Lakeview site was one of the nation’s largest. As solar has become more viable, the combined Lakeview projects will be relatively small-scale. Obsidian also is building a 5 megawatt solar project near Christmas Valley in northern Lake County while various Southern California projects will dwarf the two Lake County projects.
