Office Depot, gourmet hot dog store being built near Argonaut

The newest concept for Office Depot - much smaller than older stores - is coming to East Colfax Avenue in Capitol Hill.

"We are going to break ground in the next week or two," Scott Robinson, a principal of the privately held Hampton Partners, said in mid-May.

Hampton Partners is building the Office Depot on the parking lot at East Colfax Avenue and Pearl Street. It will replace the larger store that has been on the site for an estimated three decades. A new apartment community will replace the older store in the second phase of the project. The new Office Depot will be just west of the Argonaut Wine and Liquor store, which also is owned by Hampton Partners.

NASA's "Sustainability Base" at Moffett Field is the nation's greenest federal building

NASA's newest building at the Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, has won the distinction of being certified as the nation's "greenest" federal building.

Known as "Sustainability Base," the 50,000-square-foot, two-story office building is visually stunning: Sunlight streams through skylights, windows actually open, and the office floor plan has scrapped private offices in favor of open spaces that encourage teamwork and collaboration.

The $25 million building integrates a host of clean-energy components, including fuel cells from Bloom Energy, solar panels, a water recovery system and building controls that can react to subtle changes in sunlight, temperature, wind and occupancy. The U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) unit has awarded the building LEED Platinum status, the highest rating possible.

NASA's Sustainability Base: Greenest Gov't Building Ever!

NASA’s newest research center is going to be the greenest and most self-sustaining government building ever built. Innovations are all courtesy of space travel quality technologies and conveniences. For instance, the water treatment system uses forward osmosis to reuse grey waste water, the ceiling panels cool the air, and shades open and close automatically to make the most efficient use of natural light and heat.

Integration with nature is essential to the design of the base and the engineers have taken great care in connecting the inner workings of the building with the external landscapes. To be at one with nature, there are as many outdoor meeting spaces as indoor and large open rooms are meant to facilitate a fresh holistic-type environment.

NASA Boasts "Greenest" Federal Building in the United States

Many buildings around the country for local, state, and federal governments are going green. The federal government is especially pushing for green buildings and intends to lead the way for other corporations in the United States by adopting energy efficient practices for its facilities. Going green helps reduce the electricity used and helps reduce pollution; not to mention, more energy efficient buildings are cheaper to operate.

NASA is set to open the doors to the greenest Federal building in U.S. this week. The project is so efficient it landed a LEED Platinum rating. The building is called the NASA Sustainability Base and appropriately puts space-age technologies to work on Earth. The project gets electricity it needs from solar panels, a small wind turbine, and a Bloom Energy Box fuel cell.

NASA Ames Leads Fed With New LEED Building

Imagine a building so sophisticated that after you flushed water down a toilet, the water gets filtered and used to cool or heat your workspace.

NASA Ames officially presented on Thursday the "Sustainability Base," the research center's newest — and the federal government's greenest — facility, which this week received the highest level of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, LEED Platinum. The pricetag for the 50,000-square-foot "ultragreen" building was a mere $20.6 million.

"This reinvigorates me," said California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsome during a tour of the building on Moffett Field and after he heard that the project came under budget.

NASA's New LEED Platinum Sustainability Base is the Greenest Federal Building in the US
NASA has charted the stars and sent humans into outer space - and now they're breaking ground here on Earth by launching the greenest federal building in the United States. Set to officially open today, the LEED Platinum NASA Sustainability Base is a thinking, learning building that puts the space-age technologies of tomorrow to work on earth today. The landmark project generates more energy that it consumes using a photovoltaic array, a small wind turbine, and a Bloom Energy Box fuel cell, and it utilizes a super efficient greywater recycling system (designed for the International Space Station) to cut water use by 90% compared to a traditional building. It also features an extensive network of wireless sensors that allow the building to automatically react to changes in temperature, sunlight, wind, weather, and occupancy to provide a comfortable interior environment. Inhabitat recently had a chance to take a sneak peek at the new building, which was designed by William McDonough + Partners with integrated design and engineering by AECOM - read on for a first look!

Construction Management Firm Hired To Oversee Pico Library Project

The Pico Branch Library took another step toward its ultimate development last week when the Santa Monica City Council chose a construction management firm to spearhead the building of the latest addition of the public book depository.

Swinerton Management and Consulting beat out 37 other firms in its campaign to earn the right to transform Virginia Avenue Park into the home of the fifth branch of the Santa Monica Public Library (SMPL). Council members approved the awarded contract – worth $768,020, according to staff – as part of the consent calendar at its March 27 meeting.

City Hall believed Swinerton was the best candidate for the library’s construction management due to its relevant experience and knowledge of Santa Monica, particularly the area surrounding Virginia Avenue Park.

Metro Denver Tops Nation in Construction Jobs Added

Metro Denver leads the nation in new construction jobs, thanks largely to a handful of big projects that have contractors scrambling to hire workers.

The Denver-Aurora-Broomfield metropolitan area added 6,300 construction jobs from February 2011 to February of this year, according to a report released Tuesday by the Associated General Contractors of America.

Swinerton Builders Colorado expects to increase its professional and supervisory staff from 60 to 75 workers this year, said Scott Conrad, Colorado division manager for Swinerton. It also expects to add a still undetermined number of building-craft employees as it takes on some big jobs, including two RTD light-rail parking garages and an $80 million apartment complex in Denver's Jefferson Park neighborhood.

"We've seen more traction in hot markets like multifamily in the past three months than we did in the last three years," Conrad said.

Speer, I-25 Getting Luxury Apartments

Allied Realty plans to soon start the demolition of rundown buildings near Speer Boulevard and Interstate 25 to pave the way for a 332-unit, $80 million luxury apartment community.

The development, called 2785 Speer, has been almost five years in the making and is by far the largest apartment development planned in northwest Denver, said Lauren Brockman, principal of the Denver office of Allied Realty.

“This is just an amazing project and we are proud to be participating in it,”  said Scott Conrad, division manager for Swinerton. “My own view, is that this is a great time to be developing multifamily. HMH Builders Wins Bid to Build New Los Banos Courthouse

By Merced Sun-Star, Calif.

March 2--SAN FRANCISCO--The Administrative Office of the Courts announced the selection of HMH Builders (Harbison-Mahony-Higgins Builders Inc.) as the construction manager at risk (CMAR) for the new Los Banos courthouse for the Superior Court of Merced County.

The CMAR method entails a commitment to deliver the project within a guaranteed maximum price. HMH Builders, based in Sacramento, submitted the winning proposal to provide preconstruction services, planning, and construction management services, which will include solicitation of bids from subcontractors.

"This is great news. We look forward to the assistance of this firm with our new Los Banos Courthouse project," Brian McCabe, Presiding Judge of the Merced Superior Court, said in a news release.

The bidding process for subcontractors is expected to take place in late 2013, with prequalification preceding that. Selection criteria for the project CMAR included an evaluation of the firm's plan for outreach to local subcontractors, ensuring that qualified local firms are fully aware of the bidding opportunity, process, and timeline. Local outreach will begin immediately. All qualified subcontractors, lower-tier subcontractors, and suppliers will be considered, according to the news release.

The first phase of architectural design for the new courthouse, by the firm of Williams + Paddon, is now under way. The courthouse, to improve access to justice for western Merced County residents, will be located on 4.6 acres at the intersection of Mercey Springs Road and G Street. The new structure will house two courtrooms in about 29,500 square feet.

It is expected to become the anchor building in a new government center at the Gateway Complex, with plans to include other county and city government buildings. The project will incorporate forward-thinking elements of sustainable design and is expected to qualify for a LEED Silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. Numerous energy-saving features will make the courthouse more economical to operate over time. The courthouse project is scheduled to begin construction in early 2014 and be completed in early 2015. It was ranked as an "immediate need" in the judicial branch's capital-outlay plan, making it among the branch's highest-priority infrastructure projects. It is funded by Senate Bill 1407, enacted in 2008 to provide up to $5 billion in funding for new and renovated courthouses using court fees, penalties, and assessments with no impact on the state's General Fund, the news release said.

More information about the project is available on the California Courts website at www.courts.ca.gov/facilities-merced-losbanos.htm

Pacific Power To Build Commercial Solar Project

Pacific Power will start construction in May on its first commercial-scale solar project in Oregon, the utility announced today.

Swinerton Builders, which has offices in Portland and headquarters in San Francisco, Calif., will install the 9,000 panels for the two-megawatt solar project. The project’s cost is not being released.

The project, which will span 21 acres near Lakeview, is called the “Black Cap” after a popular hang-gliding launch point near the future project site.

Oregon-based Obsidian Finance Group developed the project. PacifiCorp will own the project rights and the land under the facility, but lease the equipment. The crystalline silicon modules are coming from international manufacturer SunTech, and the inverters are from Bend-based Advanced Energy Industries, Inc.

The project will bring Pacific Power close to filling its requirements for solar generation in Oregon. The utility must develop 8.7 megawatts of solar power by 2020 to meet state requirements.
