Demolition work is now underway on a huge smokestack which has loomed over a Concord neighborhood for decades.

The homeowners association that owns the Cowell Smokestack is spending $450,000 to dismantle the structure.  The tower originally belonged to the Cowell Cement Plant which occupied the land where the subdivision now sits. Swinerton Management & Consulting is the Construction Manager.

It has been a towering landmark in the east Bay. But after 70  years, the smokestack at the site of the old Cowell Cement Factory in Concord is about to be demolished. Swinerton Management & Consulting is the Construction Manager of the demolition.

Swinerton Builders was one of the few prestigous companies honored with a 2009 Safety Award of Excellence from the AGC of California.  Swinerton took home the award in the category "Building Division Over 1 million Worker Hours."

HMH Builders was also honored, and received an award in the category "Building Division 500,000 - 1 million worker hours." 

The Hourglass park Field House is a 26-million, fully equipped, state-of-the-art facility that includes a gymnasium, fitness center, classrooms, dance rooms, lecture rooms, multi-purpose areas, faculty and staff office areas, and a concession stand. The Field House completes the third and final phase of the Hourglass Complex. Swinerton Management & Consulting was the Construction Mannager on the project.

All construction and major renovations by the San Diego Community College District are designed and built to obtain the highest possible certification from the U. S. Green Building Council.

Swinerton was among the top in the ENR rankings of Top Design-Build Firms in the Nation.

Natomas Gateway Tower made its vertical debut in South Natomas this year. At 12 stories, the Class A office building is the tallest in Natomas, and one of the first privately developed projects in Northern California with a coveted energy-efficiency rating aimed at boosting sustainability.

The general contractor on the project is impressed by the sweeping views from the top floors of the building. "When you go upstairs, the views of downtown Sacramento are just amazing," said Dave Higgins Jr., president of HMH Builders. "Because of the position of the high-rise, you're able to step back, in a way, from downtown and view it. There's a greenbelt, and you're looking back at the downtown area and the freeway. It's very striking."

Just less than half of the 148 units in the Four Seasons Residences are under contract, said Brett Denton of Ardent Residential, which is developing the project along with owner Post Properties Inc., based in Atlanta. Lyda Swinerton Builders is the General Contractor on the project.

The Four Seasons Residences Austin will celebrate its topping out with a ceremony the morning of May 29. The 32-story building spans 435,000 square feet and will have 148 luxury condominiums. An amenities deck on the 32nd floor includes a pool and sundeck, fitness center, party room, catering kitchen and resident library.

The project's design architect is Michael Graves. Ardent Residential LP is the developer, Lyda Swinerton Builders is the general contractor and Post Properties Inc. is the owner.

5.27.09 - Metropolitan Daily Business Report

The Pala Band of Mission Indians celebrated the opening of its $100 million expansion of the Pala Casino Spa and Resort over the Memorial Day weekend. Swinerton Builders is the General Contractor at Pala. The expansion included additions to dining and gaming areas. With the arrival of Choices, Amigo's and Sushi Sake, the resort now offers 10 dining places. Choices was expanded to 20,000 square feet and has eight cooking stations. Amigo's offers Mexican cuisine with quick-serve style service, a salsa bar and cantina-style indoor and outdoor seating. Sushi Sake is a full-service sushi bar and offers traditional sushi, sashimi and rolls as well as an assortment of specialty rolls.

The casino floor has been expanded with a new Poker Room and High Limit Area. The Poker Room features 15 tables, private cage windows and tableside dining and will have a tournament schedule and jackpot promotions. The High Limit Area, a private "casino within the casino," raises the stakes with three redesigned rooms. The Slot Room, Table Games Room and exclusive High Limit Lounge are each accessible via a separate entrance.

Even today's dark economy doesn't dim the shine of these rising stars. Four of the building industry's young leaders, including Swinerton Builders Hawaii's George Ehara, share their thoughts on leadership, the recession, and the future.

In Colorado Construction's Developers of the Year issue, Swinerton Builders Colorado's One Lincoln Park received Downtown Denver Project of the Year.

The $100-million, 32-story One Lincoln Park residential development in downtown Denver features 186 luxury residential units and a unique design that has changed the skylone at the eastern edge of Denver's central business district.

Several years in the making, Laguna Beach now gets its Susi Q Senior and Community Center.  The project is the culmination of the efforts of many -- designed by LPA, Inc., built by Swinerton Builders, and project management by Griffin Structures Inc. -- and includes 8,200 square feet for the Senior Center and 8,000 square feet for the Community Center.  The pictures below show a beautiful, fresh, and contemporary space with clean lines, but let's also take note of a few sustainable design elements:

A new path emerged as the reconstruction of the Campus Mall began earlier this week. Directed by Swinerton Management & Consulting, this is a two-phase construction project that "will finally organize the main walk between Brahma Drive and Parking Lot 7," said Isabella Golovaty, senior project manager for Swinerton.

"Students, including handicapped, will have complete access to the Student Services Building," said Golovaty. "Also, it will beautify and completely change the face of the landscape of Pierce College."

Construction takes Campus Mall

Corporate America has long argued that cost was an obstacle to going green. But better technology, the high price of energy, and a new mindset have businesses embracing the concept of sustainability.

The planned expansion of the Waikiki Shopping Plaza is a prime example.  Swinerton Builders is doing the preconstruction on the project.

Swinerton put a lasting stamp on an iconic hotel when it completed a fast-track renovation at the iconic Royal Hawaiin Hotel.

Temecula-based Community Collective broke ground in mid-March on the Autumn Terrace development, a 93,900-square-foot mixed-use community in San Marcos. Development costs are estimated to be $30 million by its completion date of April 2010.

The construction team includes Allgire General Contractors in conjunction with Foundation for Form as architect, SW Engineering, civil engineer, DeLorenzo Inc., landscape architect and Swinerton Management and Consulting as Green Building Advisor.

Community Collective is applying for a LEED Certification. In an effort to attain it, the community will include energy efficient features such as solar electric panels, Energy Star-rated appliances and lighting, ultra-low-flow water fixtures and drought tolerant landscaping. Countertops and flooring will be made from recycled materials. A portion of concrete from previously demolished buildings will be crushed and used for fill and storm water management that will treat 90 percent of the runoff for removal of pollutants before it enters the public storm drain system.
