W Line Produces Jobs & Prospects, RTD Says
The 12.1-mile W light-rail line which opens Friday not only gives thousands of commuters a new way to get from Golden to Denver but also brings hundreds of jobs, along with housing and business development. The Urban Land Conservancy, for example, has been buying land and properties along the W Line — or West Rail Line — for six years, believing that affordable housing and other community assets will get new life with mass transit.
The general contractor for the transit portion of the project — Denver Transit Construction Group — tapped 550 businesses for either subcontracting or supplies, and 94 percent were locally owned, said FasTracks spokeswoman Pauletta Tonilas. Both Denver Transit and Swinerton Builders — which built two new parking garages for the W Line — also surpassed federal and RTD goals for hiring small and minority businesses, Tonilas said.
Swinerton contracted for the $13.5 million parking structure at Wadsworth Boulevard and West 14th Avenue in Lakewood and the $11.5 million parking building at West 10th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard in Denver.
