Groundbreaking begins on new SD airport parking structure

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The San Diego International Airport broke ground on a new, short-term parking structure Wednesday morning.

The structure will replace the parking lot across from Terminal 2. Airport officials say that during the workweek, most parking lots fill up, leaving one-day passengers and business travelers with few options.

The structure will have an additional 1700 spaces. An automated system will allow travelers to find a parking space without having to roam around.

The structure is expected to open in the summer of 2018.
