The biggest Bay Area construction projects cost more than the GDP of 80 countries

The Bay Area's largest construction projects cost $22 billion collectively, which is more than the gross domestic product of Cyprus.

Per the International Monetary Fund, 79 other countries also have a GDP smaller than this region's $22 billion construction tab.

That's partially due to the scale of the projects and sky-high costs. Those costs have helped contribute to the Bay area being a poster child for California's housing crisis.

While nearly half the projects on the list include housing, the top six most expensive projects — all clocking in at at least $1 billion — reflect a diversity of regional needs: Housing, office space, transit infrastructure improvements and hospital construction. The Golden State Warriors' new Chase Center Arena and the surrounding district also clocks in the top three.

By comparison, the top 50 construction projects in San Francisco have a total cost of $19.7 billion, while the top 50 in Sacramento cost $6.2 billion.
