LA Trade Tech hosts 6th Annual Construction & Career Awareness Day

Over 2,000 high school students from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) attended the annual Construction Career Awareness Day at Los Angeles Trade Tech College (LATTC).

The students were exposed to hands-on activities, including construction industry equipment on display, as well as educational, career internship opportunities and union apprenticeships in the construction industry.

The welcome remarks were given by the California Community Connection Corporation (4C) President and CEO, Rev. Stephen McGlover. Guest speaker Councilmember, Curren Price Jr. thanked the LATTC for hosting this event.

The 9th L.A district ex-councilmember, Jan Perry gave a brief speech and advised the students to take the opportunity to get a job from the exhibitors that were present.

The planned activities were scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In the morning, the students were seen with assigned 4C guides as they toured the campus and learned about the various construction trades. They were provided with information on how to prepare for careers in the construction industry.

On the campus were two extra large tents that hosted the exhibitors: Metro, Skanska, Wells Fargo, LATTC LAUSD, Balfour Beatty, Cal Trans, City of Los Angeles WIB, Kiewit, Swinerton, Turner Construction, CC Myers, Inc and Freewill CDC.

The speaking engagement started at 11am which included the President of LATTC, Larry Frank; Metro Executive Director of Vendor Contract Management, Stephanie Wiggins; Well Fargo Sr. V.P of Community Development, Byron Reed; Skanska representative, George Hanible; Bill Wherritt from LAUSD; Steve Zimmer and Bennett Kayser both LAUSD School Board members.

Also Ron Miller, Executive Secretary LA/OC Building and Construction Trades Council and Michael Dolphin, Division Chief Employment Development Department gave brief speeches.

After the speech, the students were given lunch snacks as the day’s activities ended.

The invitation-only event was sponsored by Wells Fargo, Skanska, the California Community Corporation, LAUSD, LATTC, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) and the Employment Development Department (EDD).
