City of Oakland Council District Three and the Public Works Agency Co-Host the Groundbreaking for the West Oakland Teen Center

Oakland, CA - The District 3 City Council Office and the City of Oakland Public Works Agency are pleased to announce the groundbreaking for the West Oakland Teen Center at 3233 Market Street, Oakland, California, on Monday, April 16, 2012, 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  “This has been a long, arduous process, but one that is finally coming to fruition,” notes Vice Mayor Nancy Nadel.

The planned Teen Center is in a neighborhood where 41% of youth under the age of 18 live at or below the poverty level, and where 45% of adults in West Oakland do not have a high school diploma.  “With those facts in mind, we felt it was critical to have a space designed by youth for youth.  The youth-led process succeeded beyond our expectations, and we are excited to be able to provide a safe haven for our youth as they make strong and healthy transitions into positive adults who contribute to the community,” adds Vice Mayor Nadel.

“Nancy has worked so hard to put together resources for an area of the city that is particularly in need of programs for young people. The new teen center will go a long way toward helping to provide positive opportunities to West Oakland teens," said Mayor Jean Quan.

The youth-planned priorities for the center include a space for a small business to operate a café and provide youth jobs; as well as computer rooms, student project rooms, classrooms, meeting and office space, a stage, recreation space, and more.  The building will be constructed using green building principles.  The youth worked with architect Harry Overstreet, who grew up in that neighborhood, to complete the final designs.

Construction, led by Swinerton Builders, will begin in April 2012, and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2013.  A number of community meetings will be held to determine management of and programming at the facility.
