Swinerton Wins $53M Contract to Build Beale AFB Facility

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District awarded a $53.69 million contract to Colorado -based Swinerton Builders to construct a new operations facility at Beale Air Force Base that will house 386 permanent employees.

It is not yet known if that number represents current and/or new personnel at the base.

The 85,000-square-foot facility will be used to process intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information gathered from manned and unmanned aircraft like Beale's U-2 and the RQ-4 Global Hawk.

The 548th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group will operate the "Distributed Common Ground System weapon system," where actionable intelligence can be directed to decision makers.

The new facility is being built because Beale's current system is running out of space, said Ken Wing , project manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District .

The facility will also have backup generators in case of a power outage, Wing said.

The contractor is still deciding on subcontractors, so it is unknown how many local jobs could be created from the project, Wing said.

Construction is set to begin in September, with the project wrapping up in February 2017 .
