Tour Capital One's Seattle-themed innovation center near Lake Union

Capital One Financial Corp. is growing its Seattle tech team with the help of a newly remodeled office.

The innovation center, known as Capital One Eastlake, spans the top two floors of the five-story building at 501 Eastlake Ave E.

The office has about 250 people across a variety of positions including user experience specialists, program and product managers, engineers and data scientists.

Inspired by the history of downtown Seattle and nearby Pike Place Market, the 38,000-square-foot office is modeled after the McLean, Virginia-based bank's other innovation centers in San Francisco, New York City, Chicago and Washington D.C. “We wanted to create a workspace that would orient local and outside users to the built and cultural context of Seattle," said Kirsten R. Murray, owner and principal of Olson Kundig Architects.Unfinished concrete, built-in seating and plantings throughout the building echo Seattle’s Freeway Park while a communal meeting and dining area called the Town Hall mimics the open-air style of Pike Place Market.Seattle’s cultural history of underground music clubs inspired the Speakeasy, a music and game room with art by local street artists.

The office balances aesthetics with practical design. Reconfigurable furniture and breakout areas are scattered across the two floors, allowing staff to transform the spaces depending on changing needs. The flexible meeting spaces and collective gathering areas are balanced with nooks for individuals to work quietly away from their desks.Swinerton Builders was the general contractor, Lund Opsahl was the structural engineer, Syska-Hennessey oversaw mechanical and electrical engineering and O-Lighting was in charge of lighting design.

Capital One also has two Capital One Cafés in Bellevue and South Lake Union at 333 Westlake Ave N, where customers can order coffee and test out new bank services.
