University of California Santa Cruz Breaks Ground on New Biology Building

University of California Santa Cruz in the US has broken ground on a biology building near the Long Marine Laboratory.

The cost for the building construction has been estimated at $54m, while the overall project with all infrastructure improvements will cost about $73m.

The Coastal Biology building has been designed by San Francisco-based EHDD, while Santa Clara's Swinerton Builders will serve as the construction manager.

The two-storey building will span 40,000 square feet, comprising laboratories and offices for faculty and researchers, a seminar room with a seat capacity of 125.

Other features of the building include a core seawater laboratory for research and teaching, analytical labs and rooms for specialized equipment, as well as meeting areas and conference rooms.

The project also involves construction of new greenhouses located across McAllister Way from the main building to facilitate coastal botany research, and a new parking lot adjoining the existing NOAA parking lot.

The project will be funded by the state under the University of California's capital project program.
