The Special Projects team was thrilled to be a part of yet another Sunshine on a Ranney Day makeover. Eli is seven years old and is sweet boy who is full of giggles. His journey through infancy to childhood has been challenging, but he is a survivor. Eli entered the world early at 35 weeks and weighed only three pounds. After spending years in and out of the hospital with various medical issues, his diagnosis of Aicardi-Goutieres Syndrome was finally confirmed in 2015.
In May 2015, Eli started a Compassionate Care trial at Children's National in Washington DC. The trial aims to improve Eli's quality of life. He is one of only four children that are fortunate enough to be on this trial in the United States.
We were ecstatic to have Eli's reveal on April 1st! The Special Projects team self-performed demo of the entire existing bathroom, bathtub, carpet, tile, sink, and doorframes. The bathroom door was widened to allow easier access. The shower pan was lowered in order to achieve a zero-threshold entry and ADA grab bars were installed. The plumbing was reworked to support multiple adjustable shower head fixtures. The vanity and toilet were lowered to become wheelchair accessible. The bathroom floor and shower was retiled. New lighting fixtures were installed in both the bedroom and bathroom. The bedroom was given new wood flooring, allowing for enhanced wheelchair mobility. Both the bedroom and bathroom were painted and retrimmed.
The mural in the bedroom and the lowering of the shower were the most talked about elements of the space. The incredible mural that spanned all of the walls in Eli's new room was Winnie the Pooh themed, naturally being Eli’s favorite. Eli's mom shed tears of happiness when she opened the door to Eli's new wheelchair accessible bathroom, saying, "We don't have to lift him anymore!"
It's reactions like that from parents and smiles on the faces of kids like Eli that make us so honored to work with organizations like Sunshine on a Ranney Day, and encourage us to keep up the hard work for these deserving families.
