Swinerton Teams-up with Habitat for Humanity

This July, 21 Swinerton Builders’ Care Crew volunteers and their family members partnered with Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley for a Build Day in Martinez, California.

The day began at 8:30 a.m. at Muir Ridge Development—Habitat’s new single-lot site of 20 affordable homes. Habitat is working directly with architect Geoffrey Holton & Associates to construct the single-family homes, which will be sold at below market rate to individuals and families selected by the organization.

After a quick briefing on the history of the organization from Habitat, and a look at some of their work throughout the Alameda, Contra Costa, and Santa Clara Counties, the crew split up into groups, ready to get the Build Day started. Each group was paired with a Habitat leader who assigned volunteers specific tasks and instructed them how to properly and safely use the power tools and equipment. With screwdrivers, hammers, and saws in hand, the crew spent the day roofing, insulating walls, and applying flashing to doorframes on six various houses within the Muir Ridge Development.

The Build Day was not only a great way for the crew to become more involved within the communities in which they live, work, play, and build, but they were able to spend time with colleagues who they typically don’t see on a daily basis. The Care Crew had a wonderful time volunteering, and are looking forward to their next Build Day in the near future.
