SRE Begins Construction on Largest Solar Energy Project in the Midwest

Construction is officially underway at North Star, a 100 MW solar energy project located in Chisago County, Minnesota. Longtime partner, D.E. Shaw Renewable Investments, L.L.C. (DESRI) acquired the project from Community Energy, Inc. and selected Swinerton Renewable Energy (SRE) as the EPC contractor.

The Midwest has recently come into the spotlight as one of the nation’s up-and-coming solar regions thanks to new state legislative actions and community initiatives. Following an order from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission to pursue a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the proposed 100 MW solar project, North Star will operate under a 25-year PPA with the state’s largest utility,
Xcel Energy.

When completed, North Star will be the largest solar energy plant in the Midwest and is expected to generate enough power for approximately 20,000 homes a year. Slated to come online in late 2016, the project is part of Xcel Energy’s plan to double the amount of renewable energy the company delivers to its customers in the region and achieve 63% carbon-free energy by 2030.

In line with SRE’s ongoing goal to activate the local economy, North Star will employ approximately 300 people during construction and provide the local workforce with valuable training to be utilized on future projects in the area.

SRE is proud to partner with DESRI, Xcel Energy, and Community Energy, Inc. to build what will be an impactful addition to the local community, and looks forward to playing a key role in the continued growth of solar energy in Minnesota and the broader Midwest.
