Ilani Casino Resort: Dramatic Design-Build Success on a Signature Project

After over 10 years of planning from the Cowlitz Tribe and Salishan-Mohegan, LLC, Swinerton and the Cowlitz Indian Tribe opened the doors to the Ilani Casino Resort in April 2017.

The project first broke ground in 2015, and the design-build job with Friedmutter Group Architecture & Design Studios required much more than just building a casino.

The scope of work included the construction of a new overpass above Interstate 5, which required extensive coordination with the Washington State Department of Transportation. The Swinerton project team also built new interchanges and ramps to help address new traffic.

As a result of this extensive work, the Ilani Casino Resort was named the Vancouver Business Journal's Project of the Year for 2016—before it had even opened its doors!

The awards kept coming in 2017, when ENR Northwest presented Ilani with the Sports Entertainment Award of Merit in its Best Projects of 2017.

The Ilani Casino Resort totals over 350,000 square feet for gaming, restaurant, entertainment, and retail areas, along with parking space for 3,000 cars on the 152-acre site.

The resort showcases a 100,000-square-foot gaming floor—one of the largest gaming floors in the United States—with 2,500 slot machines and 75 table games, as well as a variety of restaurants, including Michael Jordan's Steakhouse, Line & Lure, Rose & Thorn, Longhouse, and a food court.

The next steps for Ilani are building a 17,000-square-foot event center and concert venue, which is on track to open in fall 2017. A hotel will also be built on the Ilani site.

"It really changes the perception of north Clark County, if not Clark County as a whole. With the addition of Ilani, we really will have a broader spectrum of visitor tourism venues that also are available to people who live here." - Brent Grening, CEO, Port of Ridgefield'
