Swinerton Scores Double DBIA Win!

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) has honored Swinerton Builders Orange County and Los Angeles (OCLA) and Swinerton Builders San Diego with National Design-Build Merit Awards! OCLA was chosen for the Jordan High School, while San Diego was chosen for the Sharp Mary Birch project.

The Jordan High School project in Los Angeles transformed the campus from a sea of asphalt, portables, and wire-topped fencing to a modern, open space for students and faculty. Creating three different learning academies on the same campus not only enhanced the educational environment and increased graduation rates, but also created a point of pride for the entire community.

The Sharp Mary Birch Expansion and Remodel project in San Diego took place in one of the nation’s largest and highest-volume birthing facilities. Working in an active hospital, the design-build project included three unique jobs. The NICU Expansion, set on 43,000 square feet on Floors 1–2, renovated 23 NICU beds and added 14 new WACU beds. The Semi-Private Room Renovation, set on 53,000 square feet on Floors 4–6, converted 27 semi-private rooms into 54 private rooms. The Labor and Delivery/Surgery phase, set on 30,000 square feet on Floor 3, renovated 22 labor and delivery rooms, while also adding a four-bed patient holding area and a new central nurse station.

Both projects have been automatically nominated for the National Award of Excellence—the highest honor within each category. The category excellence winners will also be announced at the Design-Build Conference & Expo on November 9 in Philadelphia. As an added honor, Sharp Mary Birch was one of three finalists for the Excellence in Process Award. It will be acknowledged at the awards program, with the winner announced there as well.
